We encourage the tradition of hand spinning the yarn used for making
our rugs. Hand spinning takes more time and care, but produces a stronger
tighter fiber and gives jobs to people rather than machines. The result
is a finer, denser, more durable weave in the finished rug. Hand spun
yarn also enhances subtle variations in the natural dyes, resulting
in a rich textured appearance.

The depth and intensity of color you see in our rugs can only be achieved
through the labor-intensive natural dying process. The dyers utilize
products from nature — leaves, seeds, minerals, and insects
— to create the rich and varied tones. With the natural process,
you can be sure that the colorfast hues of the finished rugs where
created with no harm to the environment.

Weaving on a treadle loom, the weaver passes every inch of every piece
of yarn through his hands on his way to creating a piece of long lasting,
functional art. This type of loom is used for the complicated weft
face weaving technique. The use of Alpaca fiber or sheep wool, the
time tested spinning and dying methods, the care and attention to
detail of the workmanship — all combine to produce extremely
durable rugs that are meant to be used and enjoyed and will make a
significant impact on an interior. Walk all over them, all the time
— they will only get better with age. |
