Peruvian
weavers are renowned worldwide for their technical skill, innovation,
and ability to reflect their rich cultural heritage spanning centuries.
Pre-Columbian cultures placed high value on textiles as ritual and
symbolic works of art. Incredibly complex technically, their creation
consumed the greatest percentage of human labor in the Andean world.
Historically men and women from every social class, including the
Incan ruler himself, wove. Hand woven, functional art has been an
important means of expression throughout their history, since long
before Columbus “discovered” the Americas. Despite the
turmoil of history and the sheer passage of time, the Peruvian weavers
have managed to preserve their traditional methods. The processes,
tools and materials used today are the same ones used over the centuries
— the knowledge and skills passed from generation to generation.
The weavers that ArtAndes works with are proud craftspeople, inheritors
of an honored tradition handed down from their ancestors. |
